Be Lit for Life and BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) – January 2019 Edition

This month’s BYOBook Club for Busybodies book club meet took place at HS – Green – Galleria and the common thread was hard to ignore.

Our social media moment allowed our books to get their close-up!

With a book club intentionally set up for those who are too busy to keep up with assigned readings, the question always is – What are you bringing to the table?  Well, January brought in some good reads!

As always, the discussion was insightful, even funny! But by the end of the first round, I couldn’t help but notice the common theme amongst the majority of readers books this month.  Although the plots and genres varied, culture and identity, specifically African and Muslim heritage, seemed to be a core thread for all books but two.

Check out our picks and our ratings!

Books are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 and (5 being the best rating you can give).

In the New Year, Goal-Set and Goal-Get with Vision Boards!

Learn How to Create Vision Boards for New Year Success!

You may be a person who is skeptical about vision boards – maybe because you don’t see what all the fuss is about, especially if you have your goals in your head – I have heard that many of times. You may even be a person who always wanted to create one, but didn’t know how super easy it is and put it off year after year. Maybe you are a person who has seen the difference it can make in bringing  dreams into reality. Personally and professionally, I have seen the power in placing a vision on paper.

With the holidays in full swing, the last months of the year are ideal for creating vision boards. Aside from it being a great time to find craft items, your year is coming to a close and more and more clearly, you can see a future. But if you have not created one yet, you still have time before the new year to customize a visual that reflects a future you. Here are 6 easy steps you can take so when the ball drops and the clock strikes midnight, you can start the new year getting the goals you set!

1. Give yourself permission to GET!

DSC_0336.jpg

I have two full-time jobs: I teach and also serve as creative director for a lifestyle brand. Each job is demanding and causes for me to wear a lot of hats, effortlessly. As a jackie of many trades, it is easy to lose focus and energy and it is imperative to be focused to master any task, let alone a set of them. I am firm believer in vision boards because I have seen what they have done in my life. Law of Attraction is built upon the idea that regardless of age, race, or religious belief, we each have the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on.

Some dreams you catch early and some you carry on through time. Dreams are going to come in handy when crafting your board. Before gluing a thing, you have to know that your goals matter. Tapping into power, passion and purpose is an ongoing  journey.

It’s time to give life to your vision.

2. Get your Materials

IMG_9197

*Canvases come in all shapes and sizes – Posters are traditionally what is used, but bulletin boards and scrapbooks are also great foundations for your goals to be displayed.

*A variety of magazines are the greatest muse

*Scissors to cut out your inspiration

*Writing utensils (markers – various colors, pens and pencils)

*Tape/glue sticks/liquid glue

*Unique stickers or 3D trinkets and embellishments (for scrapbooking)

3. Get in your Zone

Before you create your board, create a vibe. So get the playlist right for the occasion. Do you want to set a relaxing and tranquil tone? Upbeat and hyped? Do you work best on the floor. At a desk, table?

You need to get in your zone and that is different from person to person. Some feel the power of working alone while some are charged working in a group setting. Whatever floats your vision boarding boat –  set the tone for your workspace.

I knew vision boarding would be my flagship event for Eclectically You Experience. It empowers the individual in a way unique to other events. Over the past 3 years, I’ve thrown an annual vision board party and it has been such a fulfilling experience for me, but ultimately attendees. I have used vision boards in my classroom. I have gone to other schools to offer workshops. Before that, I would create them in the privacy of my home. Both experiences work!

So, whatever is best, do you! Invite friends over or go to the local gathering or set a time for you to get in some me time.  It doesn’t matter how or where you do it, just get it done!

4. Get Real

At the end of the year, one most likely full of ups and downs, oops and Aha moments, it’s nothing like seeing progress right before your eyes. People who use vision boards intentionally experience this firsthand. So take a moment to reflect on the past. Meditate in the present. This will help you project what you want to happen in the future.

What was my top achievement so far?

What am I learning this year?

What served as my biggest fear?

What are my distractions/mission blocks?

How do I feel about my progress?

5. Get in your Feelings

IMG_9217

It is now time to get clear about your vision of the future. Ask yourself,

How do I want to feel in various areas in my life?

Vision boards should represent your feelings. You don’t want to spell out everything, like writing in a journal or diary but instead show rather than tell what you want to feel. Cover as much ground as possible.

Here are some categories to consider when envisioning the new year.

Write a note to self in the categories below about what you desire….Then find items that showcase these ideals. Cut pics, words, out of mags. Write or stick on inspirational quotes. Add artifacts that symbolize your desires.

Attitude Spiritual Mind Personal Growth
Career & Business $$$ Fitness Health
Relationships Family Fun & Social _____________

You want your board to be a quick visual reminder for you – fill it with images, illustrations, quotes and phrases that trigger something inside of you. You want this to ignite a fire in you or serve as a caution of what you want to avoid doing. Be intentional with everything you place down. It will be staring you in the face as the year goes on.

Now that you have gotten clear on what you want – honor your desires!

6. Get to work!

Here is how you use vision boards. Put them on display. Where is your board going to serve you the most? Put it there. Let it not be in vain that you have acknowledged your vision –  now like a plant, nurture it. You have planted a seed, so pour into it, water it regularly, give it light and watch it grow.

With application, in no time your vision board will be proof of progress!

Work out your vision!

***Although our boards are for us and are personal messages to ourselves, I always encourage guests at the end of each vision board event I’ve hosted to share one of the items on the board. With a friend or a loved one, share one of the goals – take it a step further – ask someone to hold you accountable. Yes, accountable. Find  someone who will check on your progress in an area you know that if you kept quiet, you will probably not do. Sometimes putting ourselves out there helps us accomplish the goal. Words and actions are a powerful combination. Accountability partners are awesome in a process of progress. Be someone’s accountability partner!

So cheers to a year of you accomplishing your goals!

Have an awesome new year!

Tap into your #power #passion #purpose

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the subject!

A new season is sweeping us up!…September is special – it is where we are forced to say, see you later summer. While entering fall, it becomes apparent that this is a season for adjusting, for change.

Here are 5 ways to embrace your best Fall!

1. Declutter…Daily

My struggle: I am a pack-rat. I collect things. I have had the hardest time letting go, but it is needed for growth. For me, this is easier said than done, but rewarding. Yep, I know “daily” sounds tedious, but #decluttering in all areas of life is a great practice and not just a spring thing.  Just like there is a cycle of life, there has got to be order in your temple (and nothing does it like taking stock and inventory on a regular basis.)

Getting rid of stuff and thoughts that no longer serve a present purpose in your life in order to clear out space or to make room for the new, can be the greatest magic trick.

2. Keep your secret ingredient, secret.

I 💛 #FridayNightLights ! #stepintoit #TGIF #litforlife #staytuned

Devices. When we are left to our own, we can either make a mess or our own recipe for success. It used to be that your bank account could tell a lot about you, but now devices do tell. Use social media, but don’t let it use you. This season, monitor…your own usage. How often are you looking at a screen? What are you sharing? At the end of the day, keep time for personal development, loved ones who are in the flesh and some precious and not so precious details for self care purposes so you can shine on and off screen.

3. Embrace your truth by treating your successes and struggles equally.

#tipTuesday - as a woman who is single, I often get asked, “how do you manage it all???” - but I think - One life - that’s what we ALL get. The MOST of it is what we got to make. We are each made to win. In fact, I know I have a lot to carry, but I've always admired those who have even more to manage than I do - like those who are married, have kids...those who are single parents. I salute. With that, we find this truth - regardless of our duties, Life is such a balancing act! And as we walk this thin line, we got to to do what we got to do when it comes to factoring in who and what is important to us in order to not tip the scale. I’m glad I like a good challenge - because every day when managing myself, a full time job and a new small business, that’s what I’m up for. And don’t forget about self care. That’s high on the list of priorities along with prayer time and meditation. Got to factor that in for everything else to even have a CHANCE at working out. Then some days, it’s like wait- #adulting just weighed me down; it’s like tipping the scale...and before handling life’s responsibilities and serving others - just got to stop - make time to press play, turn up #spotify and dance like nobody’s watching! That’s always fun and a good hearty laugh! People often wonder how to live their #eclecticallyyouexperience - just remember - we all have to be true to self on our unique journey in regards to what we can carry. Life is an ongoing balancing act...and be grateful for coordination. #confessionsofabachelorette #Eclectically , #micolewilliams #growth #grace #GO #Glow #GodsGotYouCovered

4.  Wait for peace

I love to plan, but I also have learned over the years the significance of trusting in God’s plan and His perfect timing. It’s not easy, that’s for sure, especially if you are like me and patience is virtue you have had to work on. But in taking it step by step, even if the pace feels uncomfortably slow, and by taking it day by day, even if you are hyped about what you see ahead...we are at an advantageous vantage point- we are able to tune in and tap into divine details we often miss if we are whizzing by, doing our own thing. I have found peace to be what I HAVE to live for - Not my #plans. Sometimes it’s best to just WAIT until you have peace - wait for the signals to move up or move down...or just stay put until you know HOW to move...so today, stop and see the beauty in #waiting. Have an awesome Wednesday! #confessionsofaplanner #Eclectically , #micolewilliams of #eclecticallyyouexperience ... . . . #planner #pace #clocks #schedule #steps #timing #Godstime

5. Adopt a “What if?” Mindset

#MondayMotivation — It’s funny how old friends can reveal things about you you never knew. She said in the 7th grade, I used to always ask questions, especially the ones that started off with “what if...” Well - I’m returning to that stem. This is a “what if?” season. Sometimes, because WE limit ourselves, we forget that possibilities, with faith and application, are endless. But this Monday, all that changes...even if it’s 5 minutes- work in your daily dose of daydreaming and don’t be afraid of the questions that come to mind. Too often we put more weight on getting answers, BUT the power is in the question. Here’s to endless possibilities...get your “what if’s” on. #confessionsofadreamer #eclecticallyyouexperience #eclectically , #micolewilliams #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm #whatif #therestofthisyearwillbethebestofthisyear #tobeornottobe #thatisthequestion #dreamers #daydream #dreamersdo #unapologetically #dreamon !!!!!

Netflix’s “A Great Day in Hollywood” illustrates it is a great day for Creatives, EVERYWHERE

Movies 🎥 move me. I have a solo Saturday morning ritual. I head to a matinee, sit smack dead in the middle, lean back in the sofa chairs and as the lights dim, hope to get lost in the story.

Being an only child for 15 years, television was a great friend. It was also my clock: I was a walking TV Guide, knowing what time it was based on the show that was airing. I was looking for something…inspiration.

Stories have played a big part in fueling my day to day and especially the ones where I saw myself staring back at me. There is a void of diverse representation that still needs to be filled. But there is opportunity today.

Great_Day_in_HarlemSo when I see pictures like Netflix’s remake of the Nat Kane’s 1958 photograph, “A Great Day in Harlem”, the vintage photo that featured Jazz legendary musicians, I get chills. Under the direction of Lacey Duke, the modern Hollywood take is captured by Kwaku Alston. With a new spin: Netflix’s black talented talent and behind-the-scenes kings and queens are the subjects in “A Great Day in Hollywood”

I wear many hats in life, but being a writer is the one that wakes me up in the morning and keeps me up at night. My heart beats for the story…the possibility that comes from a blank page.

Today, it is a a great day in Hollywood. It is a great day in Houston. It is a great day wherever you are planted. I keep writing my own stories.  I push to keep telling my own stories. I push others to to do the same – because if we don’t, who will?

No matter how big or how small, our stories are important and must be remembered and most importantly, told.

Eclectically You Experience – Vision Board Night Recap

EYou_173.jpg

5.19.18 @Salento Bistro in Houston, TX:

The month of May is FULL of celebrations! One hit close to home – with a “The Rest of This Year Will be the Best of This Year” themed-party, I hosted a part Client Appreciation Dinner and part Vision Board Night Recap filled with good vibes, good times and good memories!

From weddings, to retirement parties, launches, and book events, I love making occasions, special. Hi, I am Micole. Serving as Creative Director has allowed me to incorporate so much of the things I am passionate about when helping cater to the client’s style. This past year, building and growing a lifestyle brand has been an awesome experience. Based in Houston, Texas, Eclectically You Experience, LLC, a lit for life company, specializes in making one’s print, event and DIY projects, a signature experience.

Aside from working with clients, EYE has two events open to the public. Whether it is our monthly book club meet-up that travels around the city to different eateries for breakfast, or our Annual Vision Board Night, it is tailored to the individuals involved – what makes them special.

So , this particular event was personal. Well into 2018, at a midway point,  I wanted to facilitate a check-in with our goals and each other. I so enjoyed  having an intimate opportunity to dine, meditate and share dream testimonies while receiving insight for this eclectically you experience!

Check out the photos and what guests had to say!

#selflove is #selfcare and it is essential; these notes say how I owe it to myself to live life like it’s #rosegolden !

As February, a month of love, comes to a close, let the love continue! Too often, our busy schedules push us to underestimate me time. Make some time to nurture the relationship within. For each day of March and a few for April, you will find a #selflove #selfcare affirmation!  Thanks for stopping by and let’s make this month #rosegolden!

The Power of Affirmations

Over the years, I knew many people who were fans of affirmations. These positive thoughts are to be spoken verbally to ourselves and out into the universe. They are strategically written in present tense to help initiate change in your thought life and ultimately, your life. I had always been into writing New Year’s resolutions in the form of wishes. I was always a fan of writing goals and prayers during different seasons, but I never really got into affirmations. At 35, a new reality is being formed. After surviving many storms and overcoming many challenges, I still have to remind myself to affirm myself in order to continue to move forward. I have to stop and take care of myself and acknowledge what hardships I have had and how these hardships may shake things up, but never my foundation. This is a new season in my life where there is a need to redefine and rewire the brain…break negative thought patterns, speak many things into existence…and keep moving forward no matter what.

Coming from the Latin word affirmare meaning “to make firm, steady, strengthen”, affirmations are for many a proven way to rethink and act on a better life.  This is a great time to try something new. So I wrote 35 affirmations to ponder on, speak on and act on. Feel free to use them as well. MW

5 ways to make your space…sense-able

IMG_1761

Sometimes redecorating is not the answer: rethinking your space and adding some minor sensory details that make a major difference may be the solution. Whether your living space is large or small…short or tall, you don’t have to break the bank or complicate the mind to redesign and give your home an uplift. Here are some simple ways to make your environment match your desired mood.

Sight: Get some eye-candy!

IMG_1747

Aesthetically pleasing art or artifacts can strategically be placed around the home. Let these symbols represent you. Showcase your collections of coins, elephants, decorative frames, family photos…whatever motif that speaks for you in bold or subtle ways.  Don’t forget to experiment with lighting fixtures. Position some lamps in different levels of the home: some high above on shelves, some mid-level on table tops and even some on the floor to create dimension and a special vibe.

Play with color. What colors make you happy? Calm? Make you come alive? You need some of that in your home life. Get a good three from online sites like Pinterest or even the Walmart color palette paint squares to help you create a color scheme. Position splashes of your favorite hue to create a landscape that you love to look at. Add pops of that color or blocks of it, through paint, wallpaper or even accessories, for it can also play a huge part in the ambiance you want to create for your landscape.

Touch: Here is where you can get touchy-feely

IMG_1756

Get Your feelings “into” it. Play with textures that speak to you. One Saturday morning, visit your local fabric store and run your fingers across an array of fabrics that catch your eye. Then incorporate those into your accessories:  throw pillows, throws, rugs. You can implement that particular fabric either through DIY projects or by store bought items. It’s amazing what a simple faux fur rug can do in your den right in front of the couch and TV.

Hear: Let  Music  Move  You

IMG_1750

Surround-Sound yourself with tunes that take you where you want to go. Get a hold of music that can transfer you and elevate your mood.

Press play with Pandora, Google Play and Spotify for customized playlists. Low and subtle sound is always a nice surprise. Stay plugged in.

Smell: Aroma Therapy

IMG_1745

There is nothing better than coming home after a long day at work and smelling a scent that comforts you right at the door. Even if you work at home, and your space is multifunctional, you scents can ignite the spirit of what your job entails and set the tone so you can get in the right state of mind to accomplish your task list. What’s essential? Essential oils can be used on the body and also in the home, the bath. Lavender can calm. Peppermint can energize. Light candles with assorted smells. Get scents that spark.

Taste of Haven

IMG_1742

It’s always great to have something in your home that makes your taste buds water. You deserve the opportunity to retreat with a treat of choice, healthy…or not. Let it hit your sweet spot. Decorative candy dishes and even covered cake platters are great ways to add design qualities to the space. Make you a tea bar, or a coffee zen zone so that your favorite drink is easily accessible, yet a great asset to your home.

Simple seasonal fixes can help you function in a multitude of ways and can create a space you feel at home in; an eclectically you experience. MW

Stormy Weather

 Part 1

Storms reveal our true identity – and I am not talking about the metaphorical ones. Literally, during the brink of many hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and my house being struck by lightning, I crystal clearly realized more about who I was. Each and every one of those tempestuous encounters were defining moments. It is something about the heightened sense of alarm and the little, if any, time one has to make decisions that more than likely impact a person’s life one way or another. In those moments, you can realize who and what is most important to you. Whether the natural disaster in your area is a snow storm, an earthquake, a volcano…even a typhoon…we know these external factors can really rain on our parades, chill us to the bone, and shake up our worlds. But there is another side…a brighter one.

Personally, like most, I don’t ever look forward to the latest storm. Even though I am not marking my calendar, I know they are ultimately inevitable occasions that occur, every season, whether I am welcoming them…or not. They challenge us mostly because many times, there are no real ways around them. So this leaves us with just the simple fact that one must go through them.

The most recent storm I encountered with many in the city and suburbs of Houston, Texas was Tropical Storm Hurricane Harvey. During the last days of August 2017, this storm was an ongoing question mark and dangerous to say the least.

My initial reaction, not my shero one, was concern from just a day or two before hearing some tidbits about the weather pattern. “Yes, I too am happy we get a day off, but I hope everything is okay and no one loses…anything in a major way…Be safe guys.” This was the only set of euphemisms that came out in front of a group of high school students for the remainder of the day, while the sinking feeling lingered inside. I knew I was not really ready to endure another storm, but I was going to have to get ready.

Don’t get me wrong; I can always use a day off. For I felt more tired than usual due to a couple of factors that come with the start of a new school year. Then you have the weird things that happen when you have less time to get them done – like car light repair. Yep, that only happens during the first few days back at work after a whole summer off. I recently officially launched my new event and print design business. And outside of work, I had managed to work through some personal storms due to loss and grief and overcoming. So yes, I was tired and I just felt like I had enough on my plate and now, this.

There was the unsettling feeling and I’m an optimist. This storm came out of nowhere and was hard to pinpoint. Normally one side of town is projected to get hit and people out of the storm’s path can be a refuge or relief of sorts, but this was going to hit ALL sides…there didn’t seem to be a good place to run to since even neighboring cities were also in this path of Harvey.

There hadn’t been a mandatory or voluntary evacuation for my area. Horrid images of a past evacuations flooded my mind – the million car-deep traffic of evacuees haunts the city to this day because unfortunately some of the people stuck on those highways lost their lives on the road, in the heat while running out of gas and lost the ability to get to a safer zone before the storm even hit…I know on the other side of the coin is doing what my family normally does – hunker down with prayer. Neither are comfortable. Neither are absolute. You just don’t know which way the wind will blow for you.

So it’s easy to say, like most Houstonians, this was not my first storm. What helped me with any storm in my life, was remembering the storms I had already survived. Sometimes you can flee in time. Sometimes leaving the scene does more damage. Sometimes you have to go through them. There may be damage, but sometimes going through them is the only way. During the course of all the ones I have been alive for, I didn’t evacuate. Past storms left an impression on me like nothing else in this world. It is where the world seems to stop, but then again, keep going regardless of how sad your story is.

1983 during Hurricane Alicia, I was a one year old baby in Houston sweating bullets and only know what my mom and grandmother shared. It was a hot night without power and this went on for days.

2005 Hurricane Rita hit Louisiana and affected us in devastating ways. Many sides of my family piled up in my parent’s then-home in Missouri City and we were without power listening to the horrible sounds that come with devastation we would soon know to be. I still remember the broken trees, fractured houses and debris the morning after and the many neighborhoods being turned upside down.

2008 Hurricane Ike had my mom, sister and my late grandmother hunkering down in the brand new home I had just bought that same summer, hoping for the best and encountering the scariest realities due to nightmarish winds. Once again the aftermath was far from pretty…

No matter what you do, let me say this – I believe that nowhere in the world is “safe.” There is no perfect route. But it is what you have peace with that allows you to prepare the best route for you to live with. Assessments and judgement calls are made. We perceive what is best at the moment. We hope for the best. We hope for the best.

And then there is something I have learned to use that is even better than hope…it is the only way I know how to survive…

To be continued…

In the meantime I have a couple of questions for you.

What’s in your GO Bag?

Our Defining Moments

I want your instincts to lead you.Think as quickly as water rises. Jot down your answers, on a notepad, an index card, a sticky note, a computer…whatever you can find. How do you prepare for a storm? What are the first things that come to mind? What items would you fit into your emergency GO bag if you had only moments to grab them and go? If you could not take everything, what items are you most afraid of losing? What is the condition of your current home? What order would you leave your place of residency if you had moments to get out?

Feel free to share your Eclectically You Experience in comments.

Stay tuned for Part Two.

In the meantime, check out how you can
