You may be a person who is skeptical about vision boards – maybe because you don’t see what all the fuss is about, especially if you have your goals in your head – I have heard that many of times. You may even be a person who always wanted to create one, but didn’t know how super easy it is and put it off year after year. Maybe you are a person who has seen the difference it can make in bringing dreams into reality. Personally and professionally, I have seen the power in placing a vision on paper.
With the holidays in full swing, the last months of the year are ideal for creating vision boards. Aside from it being a great time to find craft items, your year is coming to a close and more and more clearly, you can see a future. But if you have not created one yet, you still have time before the new year to customize a visual that reflects a future you. Here are 6 easy steps you can take so when the ball drops and the clock strikes midnight, you can start the new year getting the goals you set!
1. Give yourself permission to GET!
I have two full-time jobs: I teach and also serve as creative director for a lifestyle brand. Each job is demanding and causes for me to wear a lot of hats, effortlessly. As a jackie of many trades, it is easy to lose focus and energy and it is imperative to be focused to master any task, let alone a set of them. I am firm believer in vision boards because I have seen what they have done in my life. Law of Attraction is built upon the idea that regardless of age, race, or religious belief, we each have the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on.
Some dreams you catch early and some you carry on through time. Dreams are going to come in handy when crafting your board. Before gluing a thing, you have to know that your goals matter. Tapping into power, passion and purpose is an ongoing journey.
It’s time to give life to your vision.
2. Get your Materials
*Canvases come in all shapes and sizes – Posters are traditionally what is used, but bulletin boards and scrapbooks are also great foundations for your goals to be displayed.
*A variety of magazines are the greatest muse
*Scissors to cut out your inspiration
*Writing utensils (markers – various colors, pens and pencils)
*Tape/glue sticks/liquid glue
*Unique stickers or 3D trinkets and embellishments (for scrapbooking)
3. Get in your Zone
Before you create your board, create a vibe. So get the playlist right for the occasion. Do you want to set a relaxing and tranquil tone? Upbeat and hyped? Do you work best on the floor. At a desk, table?
You need to get in your zone and that is different from person to person. Some feel the power of working alone while some are charged working in a group setting. Whatever floats your vision boarding boat – set the tone for your workspace.
I knew vision boarding would be my flagship event for Eclectically You Experience. It empowers the individual in a way unique to other events. Over the past 3 years, I’ve thrown an annual vision board party and it has been such a fulfilling experience for me, but ultimately attendees. I have used vision boards in my classroom. I have gone to other schools to offer workshops. Before that, I would create them in the privacy of my home. Both experiences work!
So, whatever is best, do you! Invite friends over or go to the local gathering or set a time for you to get in some me time. It doesn’t matter how or where you do it, just get it done!
4. Get Real
At the end of the year, one most likely full of ups and downs, oops and Aha moments, it’s nothing like seeing progress right before your eyes. People who use vision boards intentionally experience this firsthand. So take a moment to reflect on the past. Meditate in the present. This will help you project what you want to happen in the future.
What was my top achievement so far?
What am I learning this year?
What served as my biggest fear?
What are my distractions/mission blocks?
How do I feel about my progress?
5. Get in your Feelings
It is now time to get clear about your vision of the future. Ask yourself,
How do I want to feel in various areas in my life?
Vision boards should represent your feelings. You don’t want to spell out everything, like writing in a journal or diary but instead show rather than tell what you want to feel. Cover as much ground as possible.
Here are some categories to consider when envisioning the new year.
Write a note to self in the categories below about what you desire….Then find items that showcase these ideals. Cut pics, words, out of mags. Write or stick on inspirational quotes. Add artifacts that symbolize your desires.

You want your board to be a quick visual reminder for you – fill it with images, illustrations, quotes and phrases that trigger something inside of you. You want this to ignite a fire in you or serve as a caution of what you want to avoid doing. Be intentional with everything you place down. It will be staring you in the face as the year goes on.
Now that you have gotten clear on what you want – honor your desires!
6. Get to work!
Here is how you use vision boards. Put them on display. Where is your board going to serve you the most? Put it there. Let it not be in vain that you have acknowledged your vision – now like a plant, nurture it. You have planted a seed, so pour into it, water it regularly, give it light and watch it grow.
With application, in no time your vision board will be proof of progress!
Work out your vision!
***Although our boards are for us and are personal messages to ourselves, I always encourage guests at the end of each vision board event I’ve hosted to share one of the items on the board. With a friend or a loved one, share one of the goals – take it a step further – ask someone to hold you accountable. Yes, accountable. Find someone who will check on your progress in an area you know that if you kept quiet, you will probably not do. Sometimes putting ourselves out there helps us accomplish the goal. Words and actions are a powerful combination. Accountability partners are awesome in a process of progress. Be someone’s accountability partner!
So cheers to a year of you accomplishing your goals!
