Today with my students, I'm going to share a bit on another writing Shero for my Black History month top lit pick! I was in elementary and in a seasonal drama troupe at local landmark, The Ensemble Theatre when I was introduced to Lorraine Hansberry. Being cast to portray her in a youth production, off I went with classmates to the Houston Public Library to research. Boy, was I amazed at what this young lady did in her short life. She left us with an enormous amount of rich stories that were groundbreaking, and she did it unapologetically! She did it without compromise…we salute you! Lit pick of the day comes from the mother of a revolutionary poet/rapper/legend. When I think of the times, I think of how the struggle IS real and we all can struggle through to make something great of ourselves despite the odds. Like son…like mother – controversial, but revolutionary all the same, through their stories they did just that. And I'm grateful that people like actress Jasmine Guy made the time to look behind struggle and find greatness – the mothers who birth greatness have stories too and we need to read them. For years, I have watched mouths of a range of people drop when I say, I'm a social introvert. But it's true – I have an intrinsic cut-off time with interpersonal communication and have to retreat to process the world around me, intrapersonally in order to not feel tapped out. I have never been shy, but just a bit reserved…quiet…if I didn't watch it, I could easily become a hermit and never look back. So I say that to say, I felt the need to make a special effort to push myself out of a possible anti-social existence early on…to communicate more and outside of a few ppl. Lightbulb went off- What better way to do this? For me, journalism was the answer. In my high school's media academy, I started working in what I would soon major in in college- Mass Communications. I loved all aspects – print/ design / broadcast and it was a great excuse to talk. It was a superpower that opened up a world for me that helped me and gave me an excuse to talk to strangers, people I admired, people I didn't understand and all in the name of journalism. Journalism gave me a piece of myself…and others. Lit pick of today is dear to my heart. It's about women who represent the core of my existence. I'm sure journalism finds us for different reasons, but it found me and I'm never letting go! #blacklitmatters #blackhistorymonth #ladiespages #noliwemrogers

Normally I do a lit pick a day… but ANY mother knows she can't choose between my babies. Both books come from a place near and dear and were both a labor of love. I published my first fiction novel in 2009 and wanted to bring symbols to life through love stories. Inspired by Satire, allegory and soap operas, I introduced seven women who represented the seven deadly sins and their intertwined love tales. In 2014, I stepped out in new territory for me: a trilogy – a thriller that played with some supernatural and even sci-fi elements in order to showcase the death of greed. #tangledweboftruelovetales #toxictiestrilogy #micolewilliams #blackhistorymonth #blacklitmatters
